Carl Gussen was a football and basketball star at Alma College in Michigan. He earned all-conference honors in football in 1929 and 1930.• He was the first Alma player to ever captain two consecutive championship teams. Gussin was an All-Conference basketball player for the 1928-29, 1929-30 and 1930-31 seasons. He captained the basketball team in 1929-30 and 1930-31. Gussin contined to standout on the basketball court during five seasons in the tough Detroit Basketball Association. During the 1935-36 season, Gussin was a top-ten scorer, playing for the Detroit Hed-Aids, in the professional Midwest Basketball Conference.
