Herb Gregg was was star athlete at Northeast High School in Kansas City, Missouri . Gregg played varsity basketball for three seasons at the University of Missouri and after graduation was hired to coach the freshmen basketball team. After service in World War II,Gregg briefly played professional basketball before embarking on a coaching career. He was head basketball coach at Northern Arizona State Teachers College for twenty-four seasons (1950-74).
