JACKIE GOLDSMITH

Jackie Goldsmith starred in basketball  at Thomas Jefferson High School in Brooklyn. After service in WorldWar II, Goldsmith reentered Long Island University in the fall of 1945. He led the Blackbirds in scoring  during the 1935-46 season woith 16 points per game.  Famed  LIU coach Clair Bee called Goldsmith the best setshooter in all of college basketball. Goldsmith played professional basketball  during the 1947-48 season appearing with Toledo in the National Basketball League and with greater success with Portland of the Pacific Coast Basketball League. Goldsmith retired at the end of the season to concentrate on his other sports’ interest – illegal  gambling and point shaving of college basketball games. Over the next six years, Goldsmith  was heavily involved in the point-shaving scandals that rocked college basketball in the late 40’s and early 50’s. Goldsmith s arrested in April of  1951 and pleaded guilty in May of 1952 to bribery charges.
