Charles “Chick” Calnan was a basketball and baseball star at Pittsfield, Massachusetts High School. He transferred to Holderness Prep for two years before he enrolled at Colgate University in the fall of 1916. Calnan was solid contributer to the 15-4 team. In 1917, Calnan elisted in the Army and saw combat in Europe .during World War I. Calnan did not return to Colgate after the war, instead chosing to play professional basketball.
