Dale Morey was a high school basketball star in Martinsville, Indiana. He played basketball at nearby Butler University, but transferred after one season to Louisiana State College where he completed his collegiate career. After graduation, Morey served as basketball coach at LSU for two seasons during World War II and compiled a 28-19 record. After the war, Morey played professional basketball for two seasons with modest results. Morey enjoyed a second career in sports as a very successful amateur and sometimes professional golfer. Morey finished runner-up to Gene Littler at the 1953 U.S. Amateur Championship. In later life, Morey won many senior golf tournaments, including the U.S. senior championship twice.
