STATISTICS & HISTORY

Howard Price’s career spanned the  first decade of basketball in Philadelphia. In the early 1890’s,Price was the one of the best players in the city that was at the epicenter of the burgeoning new game of basketball. Price starred for the West Philadelphia YMCA, the most powerful team in the metropolitan area and the two-time champions of the Philadelphia District League. In 1896, Price was lured away by the Pennsylvania Bicycle Club to oversee a new club-sponsored basketball team.  Over the next three seasons Price, in the role of player-coach,  led the squad  to an outstanding record against the city’s best independent  teams.   In the fall of 1899, the Pennsylvania Bicycle Club team joined the professional Eastern Basketball League. The team struggled against the tough professional teams and Price was forced to resign at mid season.
