J. Fred Powers was the center on the first two varsity basketball teams at Notre Dame . In the second season , 1898-99, he served as captain and coach of the team. Powers was an even bigger track star for the Irish, accumulating more than half of the team’s points in most meets. In the summer of of 1899, Powers won the title of all-around best athlete at the Amateur Athletic Union competition in New York.
