Louis “Louie” Sauer was a basketball star at Herscher (Illinois) High School. Sauer enrolled at Valparaiso University where he played varsity basketball during his freshmen year. The remainder of his time at Valparaiso was marred by illness and eligibility issues. Sauer did not return for his senior year. Instead, he signed t0 play independent basketball with a team sponsored by the Gallagher Business College. In the fall of 1937, the team entered the newly-formed National Basketball League representing Kankakee, Illinois. Sauer was the second leading scorer on team that posted a 3-11 record and dropped out of the league at the end of the season.
