Murray Wier attended Grandview High School in Iowa for three years before moving to Muscatine, iowa where he comp[eted his senior year. He was a first-team all-state basketball selection as a senior. Wier was a four-year starter at the University of Iowa. In his senior year, he led the NCAA in scoring with 21.0 ppg and was named a consensus first-team All-American. Wier began his professional career with the Tri-Cities Blackhawks. Wier played for Hall of Fame coach Red Auerbach in his second season with the Blackhawks. After two seasons with the Blackhawks, Wier played his final year of professional basketball with the Waterloo Hawks of the National Professional Basketball League. Wier was the head coach at Waterloo East High School for 24 years and compiled an overall 374-140 record. In 1974, East High School won the state championship and Wier was named the Iowa State Coach of the Year
