Newt Bugbee was a well-known turn of the century athlete in Trenton, New Jersey. He played football and basketball for the Mercer County Wheelman and played briefly for the powerful Trenton Potters in the National Basketball League. In later years, Bugbee became one of the most powerful political figures in the state of New Jersey. During the course of his career he was the chairman of the state Republican Committee, chairman of the state athletic commission and the state comptroller. In 1919, he was an unsuccessful candidate for governor.
