Frank Reilly was the leading scorer on the Hofstra University basketball team for three years. After serving four years as a Marine Corps captain in the South Pacific in World War II, he returned to Hofstra where he was basketball coach from 1948 through 1955. His best record was 26 victories against 3 losses in the 1951–52 season.

Bob Benn was one of the greatest athletes in the history of Hofstra College. During his three varsity years, he starred in track, golf, baseball and basketball. He captained the basketball team and was the leading scorer for three years. He later was head basketball coach for three seasons.
