EDDIE FERAT

Eddie Ferat began playing pro basketball while still in high school. He joined his hometown Camden team during the inaugural 1898-99 season of the National Basketball League. In over his head for much of his first two seasons, Ferat completed his apprenticeship by the third season when he broke into the NBL top-ten scorers. Ferat was never among the league’s fastest players, but he was a strong defender, an able passer and above all a great long-distance set-shooter. By the 1902-03 season, Ferat was an important part of Camden’s NBL championship squad. Ferat enjoyed remarkable success during his career alongside two teammates from the Camden squad, Joe Fogarty and Winnie Kinkaide. The threesome won five championships in three leagues over the next five seasons. Ferat enjoyed one of his best seasons during his 1909-10 stint with the Eastern League Reading Bears. He led the team in scoring and was the prime reason for the clubs’ finish in a tie for first place. During the 1911-12 season, Ferat had a disastrous adventure as player-coach of the Washington team in the Central basketball League. The undermanned squad lost its first nine games before he was fired. Ferat put in brief appearances in pro basketball during the next four years, but badly overweight and out of shape, he was just a ghost of the great player he had once been.
