BOB FEERICK
Bob Feerick was among the most accurate basketball shooters of the 1940s. After staring in high school in San Francisco, Feerick enjoyed a successful collegiate career at nearby Santa Clara College. After his discharge from World War II service in the navy, Feerick played his rookie season in professional basketball with the National League Oshkosh All-Stars. The following season, he was induced by his ex-Navy buddy, Red Auerbach, to jump to the Washington entry in the Basketball Association of America. Feerick quickly emerged as a major star of the new league and led the Caps to league-best 49-11 record. During his four years with Washington, Feerick was consistently ranked among the most accurate shooters, and in different years led the league in both field goal and free throw percentage. Feerick was more than a shooter; he was a savvy floor general and strong defender and the best guard in the BAA during his first two seasons. In his final season with the Caps, Feerick served as player-coach after Auerbach had departed in a salary dispute. Feerick himself departed the next season to take a job as the coach of his alma mater, Santa Clara. He compiled a 187-129 record over the next twelve seasons at the school before he returned to professional basketball for the 1962-63 season as the head coach of the San Francisco Warriors. After just one season as coach, Feerick moved into the role of general manager of the team, a position he held for over a decade.
