Howard “Soup” Cable spent almost his entire basketball career playing in his hometown, Akron, Ohio. He joined the Akron Firestone, one of the top independent teams in the Midwest in the fall of 1933. In 1935, the Firestone joined the Midwest Basketball Conference, a pro league that two years later evolved into the National Basketball League. During Cable’s six years with the team in the two leagues, the Firestone captured first place in their division four times and won the National Basketball League championship in 1939 and 1940. Cable was a steady scorer with good speed who also worked hard on defense and enjoyed his role as a team leader. He was named to the NBL All-Star first-team three years (1938, 1939 and 1940) in a row. When the Firestone Corporation dropped pro basketball in 1941, cable signed with Toledo’s NBL team, but played only five games before he decided to retire.
