LOVEY BROWN
In the mid-1930’s, Nat “Lovey” Brown played basketball at Tilden High School in Brooklyn. Brown was a starter, but never a standout. Brown also played basketball for Army teams while serving during in World War II. In 1944, Brown rounded out his basketball career with three games for Washington in the American Basketball League. With those three games his basketball career as a player was over, but his involvement in the sport would go on for many years. In the early 1950’s , Brown’s name appeared in the sports section of every newspaper in the country. Tilden was heavily involved in the fixing of college basketball games, a scandal that rocked the sport and ended the careers of some of the most famous players of the era, including Kentucky All-Americans Alex Groza and Ralph Beard.

JIMMY BROWN
Jimmy Brown was one of many early stars to emerge out of the basketball incubator in Homestead, Pennsylvania. Brown’s brother Allie also played professionally for over ten years. Brown began his professional stint with three years in the Central League. When the league folded, he moved to the Eastern League, where he starred for ten more seasons. His best years were with the Camden Skeeters, where he was always among the league leaders in scoring despite never shooting free throws (in the era of designated free throw shooters.) Brown led the EBL in 1915-16 and 1916-17 in field goals by a wide margin.
