MERLE ALEXANDER
Merle Alexander was a lanky, athletically talented kid from Moscow, Indiana who who enjoyed a fourteen year career playing AAU, independent and professional basketball. In 1928, Alexander signed a contract with Paul Zee, the Miami-based owner of of a chain of tire stores. Zee’s band of basketball players embarked on a 46 game, two-month long tour that covered 12,000 miles though twelve states. In 1931, Alexander led Wichita Henry’s Clothiers to the National AAU Championship. Alexander was named to the AAU All-American team. In 1933, Alexander was a starter for the Akron Firestones, who captured the National Professional Basketball League championship.
