Hugo “Sonny” Gamber was an Iowa All-State basketball player at Davenport High School. Gamber played one semester of basketball at the University of Dubuque and led the team in scoring, but did not return to school in the fall. Gamber starred for the Davenport Rockets, a Midwest independent basketball power. In his late forties, Gamber began officiating local high school football and basketball games. He quickly rose through ranks and was soon officiating on the college level. Gamber went on to referee in National Basketball Association during the 1950’s and became a National Football League official in the early 1960’s. He officiated 10 NFL conference championship games and Super Bowl V.
