Seymour “Swede” Masin was a legendary scholastic athlete at Weequahic High School in Newark, New Jersey. After graduating from high school, Masin enrolled at Panzer College, a teacher’s college in nearby East Orange. At Panzer, Masin starred in three sports. He set shot put records in track and field, was named an All-American in soccer and led the basketball team to forty-four straight winning games—an all-time collegiate record at the time. Masin was the inspiration for the main character, Seymour “Swede” Levov, in Philip Roth’s Pulitzer Prize winning novel American Pastoral.
