STATISTICS & HISTORY

Eckhardt “Ecky” Calder was a football, basketball and baseball star at Montclair, New Jersey High School. In 1911, Calder, became a student at St. Lawrence University, a tiny school in upstate New York, where he also excelled in the same three sports for the next two years.  Calder was retroactively as named by the Helms Foundation to the 1913 All-America basketball team and was chosen as the 1913 College Basketball Player of the Year.  In the fall of 1913, he transferred to Columbia University, where during the 1913-1914 school year, he starred in football and basketball. Calder was eligible to play one more season of collegiate sports at Columbia, but he did not return to school in the fall of 1914. Calder remained active in basketball for the remainder of the decade, mostly with powerful independent teams such as the  Brooklyn Crescent AC and the Brooklyn Knights.
