Eddie Younger, who stood just a few inches over 5-feet tall in high school, dazzled opponents with his speed and ball-handling skills. Younger, along with teammates Bobby Wanzer and Sonny Woods, led Benjamin Franklin High School to the 1940 New York City High School championship. Younger played at Long Island University for two seasons, serving as captain of the team the second year. Younger turned professional in 1944 when he joined the famed New York Rens.

Larry Lee Varnell entered Milligan College in 1935 and graduated in 1939. In basketball, he was the only player in the Smoky Mountain Conference history to be named All-Conference all four years and led his team in scoring every year. He was also All-Conference in baseball. Varnell served for five years in the US Navy during Woeld War II in Commander Gene Tunney’s athletic program. He was assigned to the Navy All-Star basketball team at Norfolk, Virginia, where he was the leading scorer on a Navy team that included basketball hall of famers Red Holzman and Red Auerbach.In 1944, Varnell was the player coach of the Navy All-Star basketball team and managed the Navy All-Star baseball team at Pearl Harbor. That team included Hall-of-Famers Stan Musial, Peewee Reese, Bob Lemon and Johnny Mize. Varnell went to Denver in 1946 to play basketball with the Denver Nuggets. In 1949, he worked as head coach and assistant English professor at Regis College and coached their basketball team to the National Catholic Championship and the runner-up in the NAIA Tournament in Kansas City.

A native of Wheeling, W.Va., Charlie Seabright was an all-state athlete in football, basketball and baseball at Benwood Union High School before entering WEst Virginia University in 1938. Seabright was a versatile athlete at West Virginia University from 1938-41, earning three letters in football, two in basketball and two in baseball. He is considered one of the two best players from that era . Seabright had a six-year career in the National Football League. He played for the Cleveland Rams for one season and the PIttsburgh Steelers for five seasons.Seabright began his professional football career with the Cleveland Rams in 1941. but was out of football from 1942 until 1944 to serve in combat in World War II . Seabright played both offense and defense with the Steelers from 1946–1950, including stints as the starting quarterback Seabright started every game for the 1947 Steelers in a season that ended in a one-game playoff to eventual champion Philadelphia. Seabright was one of the last NFL players to play both offense and defense.
