Walter Ruckert grew up in the Far Rockaway neighborhood of New York City, a hotbed of early baskeball . Ruckert idolized famed pro basketball star, Garry Schmeelk, a Far Rockaway resident. Ruckert played professional basketball for four seasons before he entered St, John’s University in 1910. Ruckert’s college career was brief, but spectacular. .During the 1910-11 season, St. John’s was unbeaton in 14 games and defeated such strong teams as Pennesylvanaia , Yale, Colgate and St. Lawrance. Ruckert was rated by many observers as the the best collegian center in the country .Rucket left St. John’s after just one year to join Schmeelk’s New York National’s team on a two month cross-country barnstorming tour. Over the years, Ruckert would join Schmeelk on a total of four national tours.
