POP KELCHNER
Once upon a time there was a college professor who spoke seven languages and taught three, who also coached the football, basketball and baseball teams, and then goes on to become the most prolific baseball scout in major-league history. It seems like a fairy tale, but is was all true. Charles “Pop” Kelschner was a longtime sports figure in the Lehigh Valley of Eastern Pennsylvania. Kelchner attended Albright Preparatory School in Fredericksburg and then Lafayette College in Easton, where he participated in football, baseball, and track and earned bachelor of philosophy and master’s degrees.Upon graduation from Lafayette College, Kelchner began to teach languages at Albright College. He remained there for 21 years as a language instructor (Spanish, French, Latin) and served as coach and athletic director. Kelchner served as head coach of three sports at Albright College; football (1912-1918) , basketball (1900-1919) and baseball (1897-1918). In addition, Kelschner, played minor league and independent baseball and also briefly played professional basketball. After he retired from coaching, Kelchner was a scout for the St.Louis Cardinals for 40 years. Kelschner began his long full-time scouting career in 1912 with the St. Louis Browns, scouting for them till 1917. He moved over to the Cardinals in 1918, remaining there until his death in 1958. Kelchner signed 86 major-league players, believed to be the most in history.

Tony Kelly was a star athlete at Mt. Carmel High School in Chicago. Kelly was the best player on the 1937-38 Marquette University freshman basketball squad, but sat out the following year because of bone operation on his foot and the following season played only 7 games because of continuing foot problems. In 1940, Kelley returned to Chicago and enrolled at DePaul University and played AAU basketball with the Palmer Hotel team that won the Chicago city championship. Kelly was finally healthy enough to return full time to the sport in the fall of 1941. He enjoyed two standout seasons at DePaul and was captain of the 1942-43 squad. After graduation from DePaul, Kelly played professional basketball for five years including three seasons for Sheboygan in the National Basketball League . During the 1946-47 season, Kelly played for the Baltimore Bullets who posted a 31-3 record in the American Basketball League.
