James “JImmy” Jemail was born in Lebanon and came to the United States at the turn of the turn of the 20th century. Jemail played football at Brown University. He was on the Brown University football team that in 1916 played in the first Rose Bowl Game. Jemail was the “inquiring “fotographer” of the New York Daily News for more than half a century. He began the job in 1919, shortly after joining The News as a watchman—at $8 for the day. Mr. Jemail asked countless questions on current topics and human nature—as well as photographing those responding. In 1921, as a publicity stunt, Jemail appeared in one professional football game for the New York Giants, and the same season, he played in one professional basketball game for the New York Celtics.
