CHUCK CHUCKOVITS
Chuck Chuckovits was a schoolboy star at St. Vincent’s High School in Akron, Ohio. He went to college at the University of Toledo where he led the basketball team in scoring for three years and was named to the All-American team in 1938. Chuckovits had a brief, but spectacular pro career. In the 1941 World Professional Tournament in Chicago, he averaged 20.5 point per game and was named to the All-Tournament team. He was named the Chicago Herald-American’s “Pro Player of the Year”During the 1941-42 National Basketball League season, Chuckovits led all scorers with 18.5 ppg and was named the league’s Most Valuable Player.
Chuckovits later became a basketball official in the National Professional Basketball League and the National Basketball Association. He also officiated in the Big Ten, the Missouri Valley Conference, the National Industrial Basketball League, and the Mid-American Conference. He officiated the NCAA Eastern Regional and the NCAA Championship Finals in 1957 and again in 1959. In 1958 Chuckovits was inducted into the Summit County Sports Hall of Fame and in 2016 he was inducted into the Ohio Basketball Hall of Fame.
