Howard Ross was a legendary high school athlete in Lorain, Ohio. During three years at Lorain High School, he won twelve letters, three each in basketball, football, baseball and track. In his final year, he was a star halfback on the football team, set state records in the javelin, pitched two no-hitters and was named MVP of the basketball team that captured the Ohio State Championship. After graduation, Ross and his high school teammates turned professional and toured the state for three seasons before they joined the Central Basketball League in 1926. Ross was only the second black player to appear in a professional basketball league game. It had been over two decades since the Bucky Lew had completed his final season in the New England Basketball. In 1927, Ross became the player-coach of the Cleveland Elks an all-black independent team.

Durng his very brief (7 games) pro basketball career, Lou Rosenfeld, impressed everyone more with his brawling skills than with his basketball skills. Rosenfeld, who was once the New Jersey state amateur heavyweight boxing champion, manged to get into a fight in just about every pro game in which he appeared. On one memorable occasion, Rosenfeld became involved in argument with Troy center Al Kellett when Kellett’s teammate, Mac Posnack, steeped between the two in the role of peacemaker. At that very moment, Rosenfeld let go with a wild right hand punch that caught Kellett under the eye and rebounded to also hit Posnack in the face , resulting in two black eyes from a single blow.

Pete “Petey” Rosenberg was one of the most versatile athletes ever to come out of South Philadelphia. Born on the Fourth of July in 1918, he made his mark in both scholastic and professional basketball and baseball. At South Philadelphia High School, Rosenberg played baseball on the 1936 City championship team, He captained the 1937 City Championship basketball team, the team that went on to become the Eastern States Tournament Champions. From Southern, he went to Brown Prep, eventually earning a scholarship to St. Joseph’s College. He played for St. Joe’s for one year in 1939, before signing with the Philadelphia Sphas, where he played with them until 1943, at which time he went into military service. In the service, Rosenberg came across a comparative unknown and recommended him to Gottlieb. The unknown was Joe Fulks, and Gottlieb’s Warriors went on to win the NBA Championship with a 49-11 record in 1946-47.
