Henry Liebau was the best player developed in Western Pennsylvania during the formative years of the game. Liebau was the star of the the powerful South Side team that compiled a 37-3 record over two seasons in the Allegheny County Basketball League. Liebau led the the league in scoring during both the 1902-03 and 1903-04 season. Liebau remained a valuable asset to South Side during its first two seasons in the Central Basketball , 1906-07 and 1907-08.

Fred Lewis starred in basketball at James Madison High School in Brooklyn. The “Wonder Team” won 37 consecutive games over two seasons and captured the PSAL Championship in 1939. He played basketball at Long Island University before entering the Marine Corps during World War II. Lewis returned to college basketball at Eastern Kentucky University where he received All-American honors. As a junior, he was the leading college scorer in the nation. Lewis played professional basketball for four seasons before he turned to college coaching. He had successful stints at Southern Mississippi University and Syracuse University while compiling an over-all college career record of 240-127.
