Harry Knoblauch was a powerfully built, hard working, journeyman professional basketball player who was employed by 21 different teams over the course of fourteen seasons. One of his early coaches remarked that Knoblauch had the potential to be a star if he could learn to shoot better. He never did. The high point of his basketball career was the 1923-24 season when Knoblauch was the center for a Benny Borgmann-led squad that split its season between Kingston, New York and Paterson, New Jersey. The team won both the New York State League and Metropolitan League titles. In addition, Borgmann’s team claimed the mythical national professional title by winning four of six games from the mighty Original Celtics.

Bernard Knoblauch had a brief three-game professional career, but was an outstanding AAU player for a decade. During his years playing basketball at Carroll College in Wisconsin he was known as “Buss” to differentiate himself from his older brother “Buzz” Knoblauch who also played basketball at the Wisconsin school. During his ten-year AAU career, however, he adopted “Buzz” as his nickname.

Louis “Red” Klotz was a 5-foot – 7 -inch guard set-shooter who led South Philadelphia High School to city championships in 1939 and 1940 and later played two seasons for the Villanova University. Klotz played for the American Basketball League’s Philadelphia Sphas for two seasons interrupted by military service during World War II. Klotz was a member of the 1947-48 Baltimore Bullets team that won the championship of the Basketball Association of America. In 1950, Klotz began a 70-year association with the Harlem Globetrotters when he created a team to provide their nightly opposition. Early teams were known as the New York Nationals, Boston Shamrocks and New Jersey Reds, but were best known as the Washington Generals, named in honor of Dwight D. Eisenhower. Klotz played in games against the Globetrotters until he was in his 60s and coached his teams until 1995.

Ralph “Babe KLotz was a long time star of the famed Philadelphia SPHAS. Klotz played one year of college basketball at Girard College in Philalelphia. The following year he enrolled at the University of Pennsylvania , but did not play basketball at the school. Instead, he embarked on professional basketball career that spanned thirteen seasons. Klotz gained a reputation as one on the better centers of the era. Klotz, who had been a track and field star in high school, used his superior athletic ability to advantage against bigger opponents. In era when most pro basketball players also had full time jobs, Klotz enjoyed a successful thirty-three year career with the Army Corps of Engineers.

Carl “Moon” Klinzing started his basketball career in 1915 as a member of the Pittsburgh South High School team that won the city scholastic championship. It was the beginning of a career that would keep Klinzing in the forefront of the Pittsburgh sports for the next two decades. After completing his senior basketball season at Duquesne University in the spring of 1922, Klinzing signed to play for The Second -Story Morrys. The team was so named because they were sponsored by a downtown Pittsburgh clothing haberdasher named Morry Goldman whose apparel shop was on the second floor. He became known as “Second Story Morry” and his team took the same name. In the early 1920s, the Second Story Morrys were one of the best basketball teams in Pittsburgh and Klinzing was the team’s best player. In 1926, Klinzing led the Morrys to the championship of Central Basketball League. After retiring as a player in the early 1930’s, Klinzing became a well-respected referee.
