LLOYD GOLDSTEIN

Lloyd Goldstein was a member of the Universal Studios team that won  the trials for 1936 U.S. Olympic basketball team.  Goldstein did not play in the trials even though he had accompanied the team to the finals in New York City. He  did not play because an Olympic committee member had accused him of having played semi-professional baseball. Although not mentioned in the complaint, Goldstein had also played professional basketball for Detroit in the National Professional Basketball League. After his playing career was over, Goldstein remained in Hollywood, where he became the head electritian at Universal Studies and later founded his own company. Goldstein eventually retired to Palm Springs as a millionaire.

JACKIE GOLDSMITH

Jackie Goldsmith starred at Jefferson High School in Brooklyn and the Union Temple in the late 1930’s before entering the U.S. Army during World War II. Following the war, he joined Long Island University’s basketball team in the fall of 1945. LIU finished 14-9 and Goldsmith was named Helms second team All-America and first team All-Metropolitan, leading LIU and the New York Metropolitan area in scoring. with 395 points (17.2 average). During the year, he set LIU game and season scoring records.  Famed LIU coach, Clair Bee, called Goldsmith the best setshooter in all of college basketball. Goldsmith played professional basketball  during the 1947-48 season appearing with Toledo in the National Basketball League and with Portland of the Pacific Coast Basketball League. Goldsmith retired at the end of the season to concentrate on his other sports’ interest – illegal  gambling and point shaving of college basketball games. Over the next six years, Goldsmith  was heavily involved in the point-shaving scandals that rocked college basketball in the late 40’s and early 50’s. Goldsmith was arrested in April of  1951 and pleaded guilty in May of 1952 to bribery charges. Goldsmith was eventually sentenced to 2 1/2 to 4 years in prison for his participation in the scandal.

MOE GOLDMAN

Moe Goldman attended Franklin Lane High School in New York City and then enrolled at the City College of New York.  In his three years of varsity basketball, CCNY posted a 49-3 record. In his senior year, he was named to the Converse All American second-team. In a scenario that was not uncommon for the era, he played his final CCNY game on a Saturday night and the next afternoon  started his first professional  game for the Philadelphia Sphas against the Brooklyn Jewels. Goldman revolutionized the center position. Goldman was one of the shortest centers in the American Basketball League, but he could run, dribble and pass better than any of his bigger opponents. He was a splendid jumper and an agile, crafty defender. Goldman was a key element of the Sphas’ ABL championship teams in 1934, 1936, 1937 and 1940. Goldman received his Master’s degree from CCNY and taught for many years in New York CityHe later served as commissioner of the New York City Public Schools Athletic League before retiring in 1977.
