Rocky Valvano was a high school basketball star at Newtown High School in Queens, New York, nicknamed the “Corona Comet.) In later years, Valvano was a longtime high school coach and athletic director in Queens. His son Jim Valvano was a successful college basketball coach. While the head coach at North Carolina State, his team won the 1983 NCAA Championship.

Jim Usry graduated from Atlantic City High School in 1939, received a bachelor of arts degree in social education from Lincoln University in 1946, and earned his master’s degree at Glassboro State College. He was a member of the New York Renaissance pro basketball team from 1946 to 1950. Usry was a longtime educator, principal and school official. He served as mayor in of Atlantic City from 1984 until 1990.

Bill Uhlen was a long time fixture on the Rochester’ sports scene. Uhlen was a multi-sport star at East High School and at the University of Rochester. After college, Uhlen played professional basketball for Rochester teams for a decade.

Moe Udall served in World War II and then returned to the University of Arizona where he starred in basketball for three seasons. Udall played one year of professional basketball with the Denver Nuggets and then returned to the University of Arizona to attend law school. Udall served as a Congressman from the state of Arizona for thirty-one years (1961-1991). In 1976,Udall ran in the primaries against Jimmy Jimmy Carter for the Democratic presidential nomination.

Norman “Wat” Tyler was a three-sport star at Westfield High School, starring on the basketball and baseball team and excelling on the track team as one of the best high school sprinters in New England. Tyler coached the Westfield High School basketball team that lost only one during the 1915-16 season. Tyler attended New York University, but did not participate in athletics there.
