BUCKY LEW
Harry “Bucky” Lew was the first African-American to play professional basketball. Lew first attracted attention as a teenager with his speed and agility on the court. When he was just 18 years old, Lew signed with the Lowell Pawtucketville Athletic Club of the New England Basketball League for the 1902-03 season. Before the 1903- 04 season, Lew’s contract was purchased by the Haverhill team in the same league. He enjoyed an outstanding sophomore year as a professional until late in the season when he was slowed by a dislocated shoulder. Lew dislocated his shoulder again in a collision early the following season, but still managed to play in more games than other player on the team. Although Lew once scored 14 points in a game, a big number in 1902, he was not a good outside shooter. He scored most of his points on drives to the basket. Lew was an excellent passer and showed real skill as a defender. He was particularly adept at guarding some of the league’s faster players such as the famed Harry Hough. Haverhill finished in first place during the first-half of the split season ahead of the highly favored Natick club that featured Hough and Joe Fogarty. While Lew was generally well-received by fans and players alike, he did face some episodes of discrimination. After some rough matchups early in the 1904-05 season, some Natick players protested Lew’s presence in the league. President Fred Cunningham quickly fined the Natick team $50 and said there would be no color line in the New England Basketball League. The same two teams met in the playoffs, with Natick winning the championship without any further incidents. In the end, Lew’s major league professional basketball career was cut short not by prejudice, but by the harsh realities of early professional basketball. The NEBL, dependent on highly-paid stars from Philadelphia, disappeared under a sea of red ink after the 1904-05 season. Major-league basketball in New England did not take hold again until after World War II. While he never played major league basketball again, Lew remained a popular figure throughout New England playing on semi-professional teams for another two decades, until the mid 1920’s, when he was over 40 years old.

MOONEY LEVINE
Pro basketball in the 1930’s was dominated by slow, methodical playmaking that featured one or two exceptional outside shooters. Solomon “Mooney” Levine was one of the best shooters around for many years. Mooney was named to the All-New Jersey State High School basketball team in both his junior and senior years. Mooney had feelers from a number of colleges, but in the teeth of the Depression, he chose to remain in Passaic at a time that New Jersey city was a hotbed of independent basketball that could provide him with some much needed income. His longest associations were with the Passaic YMHA, and in later years, the Passaic Kenyons. Levine remained immensely popular in Passaic throughout the decade. In the late 1930’s, Levine played minor league professional basketball in upstate New York. He was the leading scorer in the New York State League at the time it suspended operation in December of 1939. After service in the Army during World War II, returned to Passaic where he finished the final two years of his pro basketball career.

BILL LEVINE
Bill Levine played varsity basketball at CCNY for two and a half seasons. He was captain of the 1944-45 squad, but was dropped from team in February because of scholastic dificultics. A few weeks later, he found himself testifying before a panel of attorneys about possible irregularities involving betting on on college basketball games at Madison Square Garden. Nothing came of the 1945 investigation, but six years later another investigation would uncover a scandal that involved the CCNY team that had just completed an unprecedented sweep of both the NCAA Basketball Tournament and the National Invitation Tournament. The scandal involved the Beavers and and six other schools and over thirty players.

FUZZY LEVANE
Andrew “Fuzzy” Levane was a basketball star at James Madison High School in New York City. The school won the city championship in 1939. Levane played college basketball at St. John’s, where he was named player of the year in the New York area in 1943 and led his team to the National Invitation Tournament title. Levane played professional basketball with the Rochester Royals for four seasons in the late 1940’s and one season for the Syracuse Nationals. He also played a handful of games for the Milwaukee Hawks in the 1952-53 season, during his first year as a NBA coach.
Levane was head coach of the New York Knicks during the 1958-59 season, leading them to a 40-32 record, a second-place finish in the N.B.A.’s Eastern Division and a playoff appearance. He resigned under pressure early in the 1959 season after the team lost 19 of its first 27 games. Levane continued working as a Knicks’ scout on and off for another thirty years. Levane returned to NBA coaching for one season, 1961-62, with his old team, the Hawks, by then in St. Louis.
