INMAN JACKSON

Inman Jackson was second only to Abe Saperstein in creating the phenomenon know as the Harlem Globetrotters. Jackson was the creative genius that transformed the Trotters from one of the dozens of traveling  basketball teams that dotted the Depressiom-era America into a team that became the most recognizable in the history of professional basketball. The team was organized in Chicago in 1926 as the all-black Savoy Big Five. Sports promoter Abe Saperstein acquired the team soon afterward.  In January of 1927, the team debuted in Hinckley, Illionois under the name New York Globetrotters. The name was changed in 1930 to Harlem Globetrotters. It was about this time that Trotters first experimented with intigrating comedy into their games. Jackson was the first to assume the role of “clown prince” on the team. The Globebetrooters  amassed an impressive record over the next decade playing against teams ranging from small town semi-professional teams to titantic battles against the top pro teams of the era, such as the Original Celtics and the Philadelphia Sphas. In 1939, the Trotters  participated in the first World Professional Basketball championship, losing to the  arch-rival New York Rens in the final game. The following year, the Globetrotters won the tournament. Inman was on the court as an integral part of the team from the very early years through the championship game in 1940 and on until his retirement as a player in 1945. Jackson remained with tHe Globetrotters’ organization in various capacities until death in 1975.

LARRY BLEACH

Larry Bleach was an outstanding all around athlete at New York Textile High School. In February of 1932, he led the school to the New York City high school basketball championship and just two months later, in April , he pitched the Textile squad to the NYC high school baseball championship.  Bleach was a four-year starter at the University of Detroit, serving as captain in his senior season. After graduating in 1937, Bleach joined the Detroit Police department where he served for over twenty-five years. Bleach played independent basketball in Detroit into the mid-1940’s. He also made occasional appearances with the New York Rens and the Harlem Globetrotters when they toured in the Midwest. In 1939, Bleach was the Trotters’ leading scorer in the World Professional Basketball Tournament in Chicago.

FATS JENKINS

Fats Jenkins was born in Harlem in 1898. He attended high school in Manhattan where he received great acclaim as a baseball and basketball star. As a teenager, Jenkins joined the St. Christopher Club, the most prominent black team in New York City. He also played for the New York Incorporators, the Commonwealth Big Five and the Loendi Big Five.  In 1924, Jenkins joined Bob Douglas’ New York Renaissance team. The Rens barnstormed up to 200 games a year. With the decline of the Original Celtics in the early 1930’s, the Rens became the premier professional basketball team in the country. Between 1931 and 1936, the team compiled an amazing 473-49 record. On a team known for its speed and quickness, Jenkins stood out. He was widely considered the fastest man in basketball and the heart of the Rens fast breaking style of basketball. He was also a relentless defender who excelled at stealing the ball. Throughout the thirties, Jenkins coached the team on the road for Douglas who often did not travel with team. In 1938-39, his final season as a Ren, the 41 year-old Jenkins helped the Rens,  long the uncrowned professional champions, finally formally capture the title at the initial World Professional Tournament in Chicago. The Rens were inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1963, but surprisingly Jenkins has not been honored as an individual for induction. Jenkins also starred in Negro League baseball for over twenty years including a long stint with the New York Black Yankees.

PUGGY BELL

Puggy Bell was one of the most versatile players in professional basketball during his career that stretched over parts of three decades. Bell was a very strong player with a soft touch. He could rebound and play aggressively under the basket, but also had the speed and ball-handling skills to play outside when needed. Bell joined the New York Renaissance in the late 1930s. He appeared in the Chicago World Pro Tournament nine times and was named MVP in 1939, the year the Rens won the professional championship. Bell spent the war years with the Washington Bears and was instrumental in their capture of the 1943 World Pro Tournament title. He returned to the Rens after the war and finished out his career in the early 1950s playing minor league basketball. He was player-coach of Manchester, the 1952-53 American Basketball League champions.
