LEO GOTTLIEB
Leo Gottlieb was a New York City prep star at De Witt Clinton High School . In 1937, Gottlieb, along with future professional player, Ralph Raplowictz, led DeWitt Clinton to the PSAL championship. Gottlieb began his pro career in 1939 with the famed Philadelphia SPHAS. Gottlien served in the army during World War II, but managed to play some games in the American Basketball League while on furlough. By the 1945-46 season, Gottlieb was among the top ten scorers in the ABL. Gottlieb played for the New York Knicks in the inaugural season of the Basketball Association of America (a forerunner to NBA). Gottlieb later served as a scout for the team.

EDDIE GOTTLIEB
Eddie Gottlieb attended South Philadelphia high school. He then attended college and briefly taught school, but his life-long passion was for the game of basketball. In 1918, he helped organize a basketball team for the South Philadelphia Hebrew Association, a neighborhood social club. The team broke off its affiliation with the club after one season but kept the SPHAS acronym for the next three decades. The SPHAS dominated the Philadelphia League in the mid-twenties winning three consecutive titles. In 1926, Gottlieb disbanded the SPHAS and took the reigns of new Philadelphia franchise in the American Basketball League. After after two seasons of mediocre results and substantial financial losses, the team folded. In 1929, Gottlieb revived the SPHAS and entered the team in the Eastern Basketball League where they won three more consecutive titles. In 1933, the Sphas joined the resurrected ABL and won the championship three of the first four seasons. Overall, the Sphas won seven of thirteen ABL titles between the 1933 and 1946. When the BAA was formed in 1946, Gottlieb, the only owner with a strong basketball background, had an enormous advantage that showed up in the standings the first few years. His team, (now called the Warriors) won the first BAA title in 1946-47 and returned to the finals the following season, but was defeated by the Baltimore Bullets. Gottieb remained as an active coach until the end of the 1954-55 season. Ironically, the Warriors won their second NBA title the following season. In 1962, Gottlieb sold the team to a group which transferred the franchise to San Francisco. Even after he sold his team, Gottlieb remained an influential figure in the NBA. He served as chairman of NBA Rules committee for 25 years, and drew up the NBA schedule right up until the time of his death in 1979. Gottlieb was a tenacious, at times stubborn person, but he was always a man of great personal integrity. His career in basketball reflected the professional game’s progression from teams sponsored by social clubs, to depression-era barnstorming teams, to weekend professional leagues, through the tentative first years of the BAA in the forties, to the birth of the superstar era with Wilt Chamberlain. Gottlieb was at the center of it all for over 60 years.

SHIKEY GOTTHOFFER
Shikey Gotthoffer was a high-school teammate of Baseball Hall of Famer Hank Greenberg at James Monroe HS in the Bronx. Their team won the New York City high school championship three (1927, 1928, 1929) consecutive years. Gotthoffer attended three colleges, but did not play basketball as a collegian because he had played on semi-professional teams around New York. Gotthoffer split his first major-league season (1932-33) between Yonkers in the Metropolitan League and the Philadelphia Moose of the Eastern League. Gotthoffer was a fine setshooter and a skilled passer. The latter attracted the attention of Eddie Gottlieb, owner of the Philadelphia Sphas. In the fall of 1933, Gotthoffer signed his first contract with the SPHAS. Gotthoffer was typical of the players that Gottlieb recruited for the SPHIAS. He was a tough defensive player with good speed and great basketball instincts for the intricate pass-oriented offense that was the backbone of the SPHAS success. He stayed with the Philadelphia team for the next ten years. Gotthoffer finished among the top-ten league scorers his first five years with the team and was a key starter on five American Basketball League championship teams. He was named ABL MVP in 1935-36

HY GOTKIN
Hy Gotkin starred in basketball at Jefferson High School in Brooklyn. Gotkin attended nearby St.John’s University where he became one of the most acclaimed stars in the country. Gotkin was one of the best long range shooters in college basketball, but where he really excelled was with his deft dribbing and dazzling passing. Gotkin led St.John’s to back to back National Invitaional Tournament championships in 1943 and 1944 and in 1945 was named an All-American. In the fall of 1945, Gotkin turned professional with the New York Gothams of the American basketball League, but he had difficulty adjusting to the rougher pro game. In 1946, Gotkin signed to play for the the New York Knickerbockers of the newly-formed Basketball Association of American, but was released prior to the regular season. Gotkin spent the rest of the season with the Eizabeth Braves in the American Basketball League, in what would turn out to be his only full season of professional basketball.
