CLINT WAGER
Clint Wager was a two-sport star at St.Mary’s College in Minnesota, Wager was twice all-conference center and twice conference individual scoring champion. After graduation, Wager embarked on careers in both professional basketball and football. Wager’s best years in basketball were the five seasons he spent in the National Basketball League with the Oshkosh All-stars. Wager was a modest scorer, but was one of the he best rebounders and toughest defenders in the league. In addition to basketball, Wagner played five years of pro football, three years with the Chicago Bears, two years with the Chicago Cardinals. In 1944, while practicing punting, Wager kicked himself in the head, fracturing his skull and knocking himself out of competition with the Chicago Cardinals for over a month.

LEW WACHTER
Lew Wachter was one of the most important innovators during the first two decades of professional basketball. Lew, along with his younger brother, Ed, was instrumental in the development of many the playing techniques and rules that are mainstays of the game to this day. They were early advocates of the bounce pass, screens and play patterns. They also were also proponents of the five-man offense in an era when many teams limited the offense to just two or three players. They also campaigned long and hard for the rule that the player fouled must take the free throw. Prior to then, team’s had a single designated player who shot all the team’s free throws. Lew organized and promoted strong independent teams featuring himself and his brother throughout the early 1900’s. In an era when the line between amateur and pro teams was blurred, the Wachter brother’s Company E team of Schenectady, New York won the 1904-05 national AAU title. In 1909, Wachter formed the Troy Trojans as an entry in the Hudson River League. Many of the players had played together on Wachter’s teams in Schenectady and Gloversville, so they brought a strong foundation of teamwork. Over the next five and half seasons, The Trojans compiled a 188-68 record and captured four league titles (two in the Hudson River League and two in the New York State Basketball League). Troy was well on its way to a fifth title when the NYSL disbanded midway through the 1914-15 season. Wachter quickly organized a barnstorming tour that took the Trojans as far west as Montana and saw them win 38 straight games. Wachter contined to barnstorm with teams throughout New England for the next half dozen years. From 1924 through 1928, he compiled a 59-26 record as coach of Dartmouth College.

ED WACHTER
Ed Wachter did not play basketball in high school in his hometown of Troy, New York, but gained an early introduction to the game playing on a teams organized by his older brother, Lew. Wachter turned pro in at age 19 and soon made his mark playing in leagues in Massachusetts from 1902 to 1905. For the next four seasons, Wachter toured extensively with powerful independent teams based in upstate New York and Vermont. In 1909, Wachter began a history making six-year association with his hometown Troy team. Wachter led the Trojans team to four consecutive championships, two in the Hudson River League and two more in the New York State Basketball League. Troy’s championship streak was broken by a single game the next season by a Utica team starring Barney Sedran and Marty Friedman. The following season, Troy was well on its way to still another title when the NYSL disbanded midway through the 1914-15 season. Wachter possessed a combination of size, speed and agility that few centers of the era could come close to matching. He excelled as a rebounder and defender and was equally adept at scoring on tap-ins or set shots. In addition, Wachter was a fine free thrower who was a strong advocate for rules that enabled the fouled player to shoot his own free throws. Wachter was an intelligent and innovative performer. He is credited with inventing the bounce pass and developing the fast-break offense. In 1915-16, was Wachter’s last full season as a player. In the years that followed, he made token appearances with various teams, but concentrated most of his time to coaching. Wachter began his career as college coach in 1914, while still active as a player and went on to became the most successful college coach of the first generation of pro stars. During the next twenty five years, He coached at Albany State, Ressselaer Polytechnic Institute, Williams, Harvard and Lafayette. Wachter also was very active in the development of rules and campaigned (without success) for a single national organization to govern basketball at all levels. He also authored books on the game and was a longtime mentor for many young men entering the coaching profession. In 1961, Wachter was elected to the Basketball Hall of Fame.
