Jerry Sullivan was a journeyman player who wore the uniform of 27 teams during his 16 pro seasons. Sullivan’s travels were partly due to the vagabond nature of pro basketball in the 1920’s and partly to do with his contentious, overheated personality. In 1919-20, his first full pro season, Sullivan left the New York State League Albany club in a dispute over his salary and his disagreements with teammates. Veteran stars Barney Sedran and Marty Freidman had quickly soured on the petulant youngster despite his obvious talent. In the early twenties, while playing for Gloversville in the NYSL and Greenpoint in the Metropolitan League, Sullivan established himself as a troublesome, but still valued performer. Sullivan was never fast, but he used toughness, guile and a muscular body to make himself into one of the best defenders in the pro game. Sullivan’s longest stretch with any team was a three and half-year stint (1923-26) with Greenpoint that culminated in the 1926 MBL title. The next season, Sullivan joined Baltimore of the American Basketball League. He remained in the ABL for three more seasons with stops in Chicago, Trenten, Syracuse and Paterson.

Just out of high school, at age 17, Dewey Sullivan played professional basketball for his hometown Mohawk Indians in the tough New York State Basketball League. Two years later, Sullivan entered Cornell University where he played for the college team. In 1919, Sullivan returned to the professional game to help pay his way through Cornell where he was in the pre-med program. In 1927, Sullivan graduated from the Philadelphia School of Osteopathy. Sullivan practiced medicine for the next three decades in New York City’s Upper West Side where his patients included many well-known theater and film actors as well as celebrities such as famed aviator Eddie Rickenbacker and tennis star Bill Tilden.

Andy Suils, a native of New York City, first played professional basketball during the 1907-08 season with the famed 23rd St. Wanderers. In 1908, he signed with Pittsburgh’s South Side club, but injuries limited him to action in just eight games. Suils followed up his abbreviated first-year with two strong seasons with South Side that elevated his status as one of the preeminent defensive stars of the game. Suils played one season in Hudson, New York before he joined the powerful Troy Trojans in 1912 where he remained for three successful seasons. In 1915, along with teammate Jack Inglis, Suils became co-owner of the Carbondale franchise in the Pennsylvania State League. Their team claimed the 1916-17 PSL League title. Unassuming and undemonstrative by nature, Suils’ crafty strategy and firm generalship won him admirers wherever he performed. He rarely scored a basket, but was a powerful presence in every game he played for over a dozen seasons because of his brilliant defensive play.

Ken Suesens was an all-state basketball player at Burlington High School in Iowa before he went on to star at the at the University of Iowa. Suesens turned professional in 1938 with the Sheboygan Redskins, the same year the team joined the National Basketball League. During his ten seasons as a player for the Redskins, Suesens never was much of a scorer, but he was long recognized as one of the best defenders in the NBL and and an outstanding ball handler and playmaker. He was known as an aggressive competitor, but also had a reputation for sportsmanship. Suesens was named player-coach prior to the 1948-49 season, the last year the team was in the NBL. At the end of the season, Suesens retired as player, but remained as the coach of the team for two more years.s the he head basketball coach at Valparsio University from 1951 until 1958.
