Matt Guokas had a steady, if unspectacular ten year pro basketball career. He was a member of the first Basketball Association of America (the current NBA) championship team in 1947. Later that year, his career ended when he lost his right leg in an automobile accident. For 18 years, starting in the late 1940’s, Guokas was the sports director at WPEN-AM. From 1953 through 1985, he broadcasted Philadelphia Eagles football games. Guokas’ brother, Al Guokas, was an NBA player as was his son, Matt Guokas, Jr.

Bob Gunn, a graduate of Detroit Cass Tech High School, lettered in basketball four years at the City College of Detroit, now known as Wayne State. Gunn was the starting center of the 1925, 1926, 1927 , and 1928 teams. . Gunn was a prolific scorer, finishing with 756 career points in an era when 600-career point scorers were very rare. Gunn led the nation in scoring with 267 points in the 1927-28 season. leading City College of Detroit’s ‘ famous “Point A Minute Team” to an 18-1 overall record, best in in school history. The 1927-28 team” may have been undefeated that season, if iGunn had not suffered a badly sprained ankle before playing Manhattan College in New York. Without Gunn in the line-up, Wayne State fell behind 31-19, with only three minutes remaining, Gunn entered the game and scored the Griffins’ last 11 points of the game, but Manhattan hung on to claim a34-30 victory. Gunn graduated from Wayne State’s Medical School in 1933. Nine years later, Gunn returned to medical school to receive his certification as a surgeon and anesthesiologist.

Walter “Dutch Guenther” did not play basketball in high school or college. He first gained notice for his basketball skills while playing in Springfield, Massachusetts church leagues. When he was just 18 years old, he signed to play with the Fisk Red Tops, one of the best independent teams in Massachusetts. By the early 1920’s, Guenther was widely considered to be the best player in New England. In 1923, he led the Massachusetts Interstate League in scoring. When Boston joined the American Basketball League in 1925, Guenther was the first player signed to a contract. He led the team in scoring and was the best all-around player on the team. When Boston dropped out at mid-season, Guenther was quickly signed by the Cleveland Rosenblums who went on to win the ABL championship. In an era, when basketball was a very rough and sometimes brutal sport, Guenther was noted for his sportsmanship and fair play.
